Idiom là những câu/cụm từ được người bản xứ thường xuyên sử dụng trong giao tiếp hằng ngày. Nếu bạn đang có ý định thi IELTS hoặc muốn nâng cao khả năng giao tiếp bằng tiếng Anh thì nhất định không thể bỏ qua bài viết này. "Sự có mặt" của idiom trong bài giao tiếp (IELTS speaking) là một trong những tiêu chí giúp bạn đạt điểm cao. Dưới đây là danh sách những Idioms bắt đầu bằng chữ "B". Bucket list

Meaning: a list of achievements or experiences someone wants to have during their lifetime (danh sách mục tiêu/ công việc phải làm)

Example: Go and buy some sweaters, I have many other things left on my bucket list.

Black day

Meaning: it is a day on which something terrible has happened (ngày xui xẻo)

Example: My grandmother told me that it is a black day tomorrow.

By chance

Meaning: something which was not planned to happen (vô tình)

Example: He told himself that it was by chance so as to bring peace to his mind.

Be on the ball

Meaning: be aware of what is happening and be able to react or deal with it quickly (biết mình biết ta)

Example: For the assistant manager’s job we need someone who’s really on the ball.

Be barking up the wrong tree

Meaning: be mistaken about something (sai lầm)

Example: The police are barking up the wrong tree if they think I had anything to do with the crime! I wasn’t even in the country when it happened!

Below the belt

Meaning: unfair and unkind (không công bằng/ không tốt bụng)

Example: Her remarks about his age were a bit below the belt.

Bend the truth

Meaning: say something that is not completely true (bẻ cong sự thật)

Example: In the end he admitted bending the truth. He had done some of his essay but he hadn’t finished it.

Be bent on something/ on doing something

Meaning: be determined to do or have something (quyết định làm gì)

Example: I advised her against it but she was bent on taking part in the marathon.

Bide your time

Meaning: wait for a suitable opportunity to do something (chờ thời cơ)

Example: She’s just biding her time until the right job comes.

Bite off more than you can chew

Meaning: attempt to do smth that is too difficult for you or that you do not have enough time to do (cố đấm ăn xôi)

Example: He’s promised to get all this work finished by the weekend but I’ve got a feeling he’s bitten off more than he can chew.

Bite your tongue

Meaning: stop yourself from saying something that might upset somebody or cause an argument, although you want to speak (nhường nhịn)

Example: I didn’t believe her explanation but I bit my tongue

Black and blue

Meaning: covered with bruises (thâm tím, bầm tím)

Example: She was black and blue all over after falling downstairs.

A blessing in disguise

Meaning: a thing that seems bad, unpleasant, etc. at first but that has advantages in the end (trong cái rủi có cái may)

Example: Not getting that job turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as the firm went out of business only a few months later.

Break even

Meaning: make neither a profit not a loss (hòa vốn)

Example: In the first year of the business we only just managed to break even.

Break the news

Meaning: to make something known (cho ai biết)

Example: You’d better break the news to your father carefully. After all, you don’t want him to have a heart attack.

A breath of fresh air

Meaning: a person or thing that is new and different and therefore interesting and exciting (luồng khí mới)

Example: Having these young people living with us is like a breath of fresh air after years on our own.

Burn your boats/ bridges

Meaning: do something that makes it impossible for you to return to a previous situation (không còn đường lui)

Example: Once you have signed your documents, you’ll have burned your boats, and will have to go ahead with the sale.

Burn the candle at both ends

Meaning: Make yourself very tired by doing too much, especially by going to bed late and getting up early (làm việc sớm, ngủ muộn/ cực nhọc)

Example: You look exhausted. Been burning the candle at both ends, have you?

Be bursting to do something

Meaning: want to do smth so much that you can hardly stop yourself (không thể ngăn cản bản thân khỏi mong muốn làm gì)

Example: She was just bursting to tell us the news.

(as) busy as a bee

Meaning: very busy (bận bịu)

Example: Jack is a Manager of a Landscaping Company; he have to travel around to have meeting with customers. I thought he is busy as a bee.

Back on one's feet

Meaning: to be healthy again after sickness (khỏe lại) 

Example:  I couldn’t do anything for two weeks while I had the flu but now I’m back on my feet

Back to square one

Meaning: to be back at the starting point of something (trở lại điểm xuất phát) 

Example: I picked up all the leaves and branches from my lawn yesterday but there was a storm last night and now I’m back to square one

Bad blood (between people)

Meaning: bad or unfriendly relationships between people or groups of people (mối quan hệ xấu)  

Example: There’s been bad blood between two of my best friends since they fought over the same girl this summer and now I have to see them separately.

Bad mouth (someone)

Meaning: to say bad things about someone (nói xấu)  

Example:  I heard you were bad mouthing me so if you have a problem tell me right now.

Bang for the buck

Meaning: to have good value for money spent (đáng đồng tiền) 

Example:  I recommend you buy this television because it has the best bang for the buck.

Bang one's head against the wall

Meaning: to feel frustrated trying to do something that’s not possible (cố làm gì đó mà vô vọng)

Example: I try to suggest new projects each week at the staff meeting but I feel like I’m banging my head against the wall because no one listens to me.

Break the bank

Meaning: to be too costly or expensive (đắt đỏ)  

Example: These days you can easily buy a smart phone without breaking the bank.

Beauty is only skin deep

Meaning: a person's inner beauty (not outer appearance) (vẻ đẹp bên trong)  

Example: I really believe that beauty is only skin deepmy wife may be average in looks but she's kind, gentle and super smart.
