Larger Than Life |
Meaning: Conveying a sense of greatness, imposing (hơn cả mạng sống)
Example: Celebrities are always larger than life to their fans.
Last but not least
Meaning: What I have just said does not reflect a ranking in importance (cuối cùng nhưng không phải kém nhất, diễn tả sự ngang hàng)
Example: And last but not least, our stalwart IT staff—this issue never would have been published without them!
Meaning: Laughing a lot is a very effective means of recovering from physical or mental injury (nụ cười là thang thuốc bổ tốt nhất)
Example: I think the best thing for you right now would be to spend some time with people you can joke around with. Laughter is the best medicine, after all.
Meaning: Become more familiar with a job or field of endeavor; be trained (được huấn luyện, đào tạo quen hơn với công việc)
Example: We have a few high-priority projects we need to get done now, so you'll need to learn the ropes on your own.
Meaning: Abandon someone in a difficult situation (bỏ mặt ai đó trong tình huống khó khăn)
Example: When Janet's husband decided to go on a weekend getaway with his friends, he left her in the lurch organizing her kid's birthday party.
Meaning: Listen (nghe)
Example: Thank you for lending an ear, I feel much better now that I've gotten that off my chest.
Meaning: Agree to forget about a past conflict (đồng ý quên đi bất đồng trong quá khứ)
Example: I said I was sorry—can't we let bygones be bygones?
Let Off (some) Steam
Meaning: To express anger and frustration in a way that does no damage (giải tỏa nóng giận/ mệt mỏi một cách tích cực)
Example: When work gets frustrating, I like to go bowling to let off some steam.
Let (one’s) Hair Down
Meaning: To relax and enjoy themselves (thư giãn, tận hưởng)
Example: Come on, Jim, this is a party! Let your hair down and go a little wild!
Meaning: Reveal a secret, usually a secret you or others are trying to keep (tiết lộ bí mật)
Example: How did Mom find out we were planning a surprise party for her? Who let the cat out of the bag?
Meaning: Life is wonderful or very pleasant (cuộc sống tươi đẹp)
Example: I got a promotion and got engaged in the span of a week! Life is just a bowl of cherries these days!
Meaning: A sign of hope after a long period of difficulties (tia sáng cuối đường hầm - hi vọng sau thời gian khó khăn)
Example: Now that the doctors have been able to diagnose what's wrong with me, there is finally light at the end of the tunnel.
Meaning: To be so excited about one’s surroundings that one acts in a childlike or silly way (hứng thú, vui mừng như đứa trẻ ở trong cửa hàng bánh kẹo)
Example: Liam loves football so much that he's like a kid in a candy store any time he steps into the stadium.
Meaning: Sons inherit their fathers’ traits and preferences, often even without realizing it (ý muốn nói con trai có những đặc điểm, tính tình giống bố)
Example: Tommy's headstrong and impatient—like father, like son.
Meaning: Very easy (dễ dàng)
Example: If you think that this game will be like taking candy from a baby, you're seriously underestimating your opponents.
Meaning: Bearing a strong resemblance (giống nhau như 2 hạt đậu)
Example: Those kids have the same wacky sense of humor—they're truly like two peas in a pod.
Meaning: Any dangerous or frightening place (nơi nguy hiểm)
Example: I felt like I was walking into the lion's den when I went in front of the board for my annual review.
Meaning: The largest part of something (phần lớn nhất)
Example: Even though we're all talented, it's always our youngest brother who gets the lion's share of our parents' praise and attention.
Live Large
Meaning: Have a luxurious lifestyle (cuộc sống xa hoa)
Example: We lived large while we were in Vegas, but now it's back to the old grind.
Meaning: A predatory lender; one who makes high-interest loans to desperate people (vay nặng lãi)
Example: Why go to a loan shark when you can borrow from the bank at the legal rate?
Meaning: Something with little chance of success (việc ít cơ hội chiến thắng)
Example: I know it's a long shot because of his busy schedule, but maybe I can convince him to help me with this project.
Meaning: Take no notice of violations of laws or rules, unofficially condone something (làm ngơ việc sai)
Example: I know I didn't follow the rules, but can't you just look the other way?
Meaning: To fall out of contact (mất liên lạc)
Example: Unfortunately, my college roommate and I lost touch over the years, so I have no idea how she's doing now.
Meaning: Falling in love with somebody the first time you see them (yêu từ cái nhìn đầu tiên)
Example: When I met my wife, it was love at first sight.
Meaning: Somebody who cheats on his/her partner (người phản bội bạn tình của mình)
Example: You are already in a relationship, why do you want to ask another woman out for a date? Don't be a love rat.
Meaning: To love someone completely (yêu bằng cả trái tim và tâm hồn)
Example: I love you with all of my heart and soul
