Odds and ends
Meaning: a variety of things (often left-over things) (nhiều phần linh tinh thừa lại)
Example: I made this quilt out of some odds and ends from the linen closet.
Off and on (on and off)
Meaning: working or existing sometimes but not at other times. (tắt bật thay phiên)
Example: The electricity has been off and on for the past five hours since the storm hit.
On and on (and on)
Meaning: continuously without stopping (tiếp tục không ngừng nghỉ)
Example: These management meetings just go on and on and on and I can never get any work done.
Once again
Meaning: another time (lần khác)
Example: Once again we see each other at the grocery store. This is really unusual.
Once and for all
Meaning: finally and completely (hoàn tất)
Example: After doing crash diets during my entire 20s, I lost the weight once and for all when I started to eat sensibly.
Once in a blue moon
Meaning: Very rarely (hiếm)
Example: Peter only comes out for a drink once in blue moon now that he has kids.
One after the other
Meaning: one thing is followed by the next person or thing.
Example: We need to solve this problem quickly because the complaints are coming in one after another.
One by one
Meaning: one thing or person immediately after another. (người này nối tiếp người kia)
Example: Everyone please line up at the entrance one by one and then I’ll give you the tickets.
One and only
Meaning: only (duy nhất)
Example: This is my one and only photo of your great-grandmother so be careful with it.
Open to something
Meaning: willing to consider something (sẵn sàng cân nhắc)
Example: I’m open to suggestions about how we divide up the work for this project.
Open up
Meaning: to speak honestly and freely about something personal. (mở lòng)
Example: My sister opened up and told me she’s very unhappy in her marriage
Out loud
Meaning: to voice something so others can hear it. (lớn tiếng)
Example: When I told my mother I needed a $300 per week she laughed out loud and told me to get a job.
Out of line
Meaning: Not in agreement or accordance with generally accepted or established limits (không theo thỏa thuận đã được thiết lập)
Example: That price seems way out of line with other repairment I've dealt with.
Out of the blue
Meaning: Completely unexpectedly. (hoàn toàn không ngờ tới)
Example: She seemed so surprised by the news that it must have come out of the blue.
Over and over
Meaning: many times (nhiều lần)
Example: Shut up! You keep telling the same stories over and over and no one cares.
Over my dead body
Meaning: I will never allow it; under no circumstances will that be permitted to happen (không cho phép điều gì xảy ra, hãy bước qua xcá tôi nếu bạn muốn làm gì đó)
Example: Over my dead body will you drive home after you've been drinking!
Over the moon
Meaning: to be extremely happy or pleased (cực kì hạnh phúc/ vui)
Example: To be honest, we were over the moon when our daughter's awful boyfriend cheated on her and then broke up with her.
Owe it to someone to do something
Meaning: you have an obligation to do something for someone (nợ, vâng lời ai đó làm điều gì)
Example: You owe it to yourself to take better care of your health.
