Year In, (and) Year Out
Meaning: Every year; year after year (mọi năm, liên tiếp)
Example: Year in and year out, Thompson has been the dominant pitcher in this league. His consistency is really extraordinary.
You Can Lead a Horse to Water, but You Can’t Make It Drink
Meaning: You can give someone an advantage or provide them with an opportunity, but you can't force them to do something if they don't want to (bạn có thể cho người khác cơ hội nhưng không thể bắt họ nhận)
Example: A: "I just don't understand. We've given him the very best education and introduced him to the right people, but he just won't pursue a meaningful career." B: "Well, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink."
Meaning: Don't base your opinion of something (or someone) on the way it (or one) looks (giống câu đừng trông mặt mà bắt hình dong)
Example: This report may look dull, but you can't judge a book by its cover—I will have you riveted by the facts and figures in no time!
You Can’t Make an Omelette without breaking (a few) eggs
Meaning: Sometimes, you have to do unpleasant things in order to complete a task or meet a goal (để hoàn thành mục tiêu thì luôn sẽ có những thất bại trước)
Example: Your students clearly don't respect you. I know you don't want to yell at them, but you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.
You can't take it with you
Meaning: everybody leaves their wealth behind after death (không thể mang theo sau khi chết)
Example: The whole world knows that you can't take it with you but they still have so much affiliation to their worldly possessions
You can't teach an old dog a new trick
Meaning: you cannot make others change their habits (không thể khiến ai thay đổi)
Example: I tried to make my grandmother learn how to use a smartphone but it was just like you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
You know better than that
Meaning: used to express disappointment when someone makes a mistake which they probably shouldn't have (dùng để biểu thị sự thất vọng khi ai đó phạm lỗi không nên có)
Example: She told me that you abused her, you know better than that.
You Know the Drill
Meaning: To be familiar with what happens or what needs to be done, without having to be told (quá quen với việc đang diễn ra)
Example: OK, everyone, you know the drill! Stand beside your bunks and do not speak unless spoken to.
You are what you eat
Meaning: One's overall health is linked to one's eating habits (thói quen ăn uống ảnh hưởng đến sức khỏe)
Example: A: "Sam has a terrible diet, and I think that's why she gets sick so often." B: "Well, you are what you eat."
You Snooze, You Lose
Meaning: If you wait too long to do something, that opportunity might become unavailable (chờ đợi quá lâu sẽ mất cơ hội)
Example: Come on, we have to get to the bakery early, before all the donuts are sold out! You snooze, you lose!
Meaning: Behaving or thinking in a way that is more youthful than what traditionally accompanies one's actual age. (cảm thấy khỏe mạnh/ tràn đầy sinh khí)
Example: My knees are a bit creaky and my back hurts getting out of bed, but I still feel young at heart and thirst for adventure!
Meaning: I do not know either; I have no idea. Typically said in response to a question (tôi cũng không biết, thường dùng để trả lời câu hỏi)
Example: A: "Where's Hank?" B: "Your guess is as good as mine. He didn't say anything to me."
Meaning: The extent to which you enjoy, appreciate, benefit from, etc., something will be different depending on your own personal preferences or needs. (mọi người đều có cảm nhận khác nhau)
Example: It isn't a mind-blowing or important film to watch, but I enjoyed it for its spectacle and humor. Your mileage may vary, though.
Meaning: It is one's time to die, suffer, or be punished. (thời gian của bạn đến rồi, tới lượt bạn)
Example: My only wish is that you don't feel any pain when your number is up.
Your belly button/ eyes is bigger than your stomach
Meaning: To take on more responsibilities than one can handle (lấy nhiều hơn khả năng)
Example: Your belly button/ eyes are bigger than your stomach if you think you can get all this work done by the end of the week.
You've made your bed- you'll have to lie in it
Meaning: One must endure the unpleasant situation that they have created (chịu những hậu quả do chính họ làm ra)
Example: I don't feel at all bad that he has no friends after having sold everyone out on his way to the top. He's made his bed, and he'll have to lie in it.
You 're on
Meaning: used to accept a challenge or bet (chấp nhận lời thách đấu)
Example: Max: I challenge you to join me in my 100km run this month. Samuel: You're on!
- You can't have your cake and eat it
Meaning: To have or do two things that one desires that are normally contradictory or impossible to have or do simultaneously (không thể có cả hai)
Example: You're never going to save enough money to buy a house if you keep buying expensive appliances and cars. You can't have your cake and eat it, too.
You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours
Meaning: You help me and I'll help you (giúp qua giúp lại)
Example: Thanks for the file. Here’s your money—you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours, remember?
You reap what you sow
Meaning: Your actions dictate the consequences (kết quả chính là từ hành động của bạn)
Example: Of course you're being investigated for tax fraud—you've spent years trying to avoid paying them. You reap what you sow.
You pays your money and you takes your choice/ chance
Meaning: When you buy something, you must accept the risk that it will not be what you wanted (bạn đã trả tiền thì phải chấp nhận hậu quả)
Example: I'm sorry to hear that the laptop you bought online doesn't work, but you pay your money and you take your choice.
You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family
Meaning: Some things you can choose, but others you cannot, so you have to try to make the best of what you have where you have no choice (câu hoàn chỉnh - ý bảo có những việc có thể chọn, những việc không)
