Phrasal Verb - cụm động từ - là một trong những nội dung cần thiết cho tất cả người học và muốn học tốt tiếng Anh. Học Phrasal verb vô cùng quan trọng chúng giúp chúng ta vừa có được vốn từ vựng nói riêng và vừa có có được những động từ tiếng Anh cần thiết nhất giúp người học tiếng Anh làm chủ trong giao tiếp. Keep (something) down
Nghĩa 1: Restrain or control (a sound) (giảm, kiểm soát)
Ví dụ: We must keep the noise down, or the neighbours will complain.
Nghĩa 2: Cause not to increase or rise (giảm để không gây ra gia tăng)
Ví dụ: It is essential to keep the numbers down to avoid overcrowding.
Keep on
Nghĩa 1: Persist or continue (tiếp tục)
Ví dụ: Mum, Jimmy keeps on poking me!
Nghĩa 2: Persist in talking about a subject to the annoyance of the listener (nói liên tục một việc gây khó chịu cho người khác)
Ví dụ: For goodness sake, will you stop keeping on about it!
Nghĩa 3: Cause or allow to remain in an existing position (duy trì)
Ví dụ: The new boss would like to keep on the present secretary.
Keep out of
Nghĩa 1: Stay away from (a place or condition) (tránh xa nơi nào hoặc tình huống)
Ví dụ: I am keeping out of trouble.
Keep across
Nghĩa: Keep abreast of or up to date with; to keep people informed of (theo kịp/ cập nhật)
Ví dụ: We’ll keep across this story for you as the events unfold.
Keep (something) around
Nghĩa: Keep something near one (giữ gì đó gần bên)
Ví dụ: It’s worth keeping a dictionary around in case you come across an unfamiliar word.
Keep away
Nghĩa 1: Refrain from coming (near) (kiềm chế sự tiếp cận)
Ví dụ: I’m keeping away from Joe until he calms down.
Nghĩa 2: Prevent from coming (near) (ngăn chặn sự tiếp cận)
Ví dụ: Keep your children away from the construction site: it’s dangerous!
Keep away from
Nghĩa 1: Avoid or evade (tránh/ trốn)
Ví dụ: He tried to keep away from danger.
Nghĩa 2: Deny (someone) access to (từ chối ai đó tiếp cận)
Ví dụ: He tried to keep Jack away from his daughter.
Keep back
Nghĩa: Maintain a safe distance (giữ khoảng cách an toàn)
Ví dụ: Police were warning people to keep back.
Keep from (+ doing something)
Nghĩa: Control yourself, refrain (khiến ai đó không)
Ví dụ: These worries kept her from sleeping properly.
Keep (somebody) in
Nghĩa: Not allow someone out (không cho ra ngoài)
Ví dụ: They were kept in after school.
Keep to oneself
Nghĩa: Purposely avoid interaction with others; to be introverted (tránh tương tác với mọi người)
Ví dụ: She preferred to keep to herself after her husband died.
Keep apart
Nghĩa 1: ensure that two or more people or things remain physically separated (cách xa)
Ví dụ: My family wants to keep me and Tommy apart, but we are in love and destined to be together!
Keep (something) up
Nghĩa 1: Stay even or ahead (theo kịp hoặc dẫn trước)
Ví dụ: They ran so fast I could hardly keep up.
Nghĩa 2: Ensure that one remains well-informed about something (theo kịp/ cập nhật thông tin)
Ví dụ: I always try to keep up with current affairs.
Keep up with
Nghĩa: Move at the same rate (theo kịp)
Ví dụ: She walks so fast I can never keep up with her.
